Things which I've looked at. Things which have looked at me. Things in-between.

[DELAYED] Had a spontaneous afternoon out in Blackpool because the boys decided on a Sea Life visit.

11th April 2012 - Enjoyed the promenade, which is rather tastefully appointed these days; on the seaward side, at least. The comedy pavement is pretty cool. Got lucky with the weather, and the sun explains some of the wonky shots - couldn't see the screen. The boys really enjoyed themselves, despite the fact we hit a Sea Life centre about every 6 months, on average.

[Delayed because Posterous bounced the email several times]

Afternoon Delight

In a rare and happy confluence of an afternoon off work during term-time (no kids) and nice weather, I finally got round to more thoroughly checking out Slape Lane, a bridleway running between Vicarage Lane in Burton-in-Kendal and the road leading up to Farleton Moor through Clawthorpe. The whole stretch is no more than a mile and a quarter, but there's an interesting variety of terrain, from the field of grass leading up to the woods from the Clawthorpe end, to some impossible rocky, rooty, muddy, and steep sections in those same woods. In fact, after the fields,  I thought the whole route was going to be a washout. After a couple of hundred yards though, the worst (impossible) section is done, and there's maybe 3/4s of a mile of doable trail, some rather like single track it's so narrow (though dry-stone walled), some very rooty, some with lots of limestone pavement with lovely little natural ramps and drops, some fast sections, some very slow. A nice section to get a bit of flow going, but still with plenty of challenges along the way to keep the concentration up and to feel like an achievement when successfully overcome (the one feature that did cause me to UPD a couple of times was the 'gravel puddle' - sections where the stone had shattered and worn into pools of stones of nearly the size of a tennis ball, small enough to move under the rubber, but not so small that one can simply splash on through).

Not far, but good exercise on one wheel, and I had a bit of a glow on by the time I reached the vantage point at Vicarage Lane (in the pictures, the one where I've removed helmet, gloves, and bag, to help dump some heat before heading back).

Lots of sheep, few people. The people I did meet said hello, but didn't start singing the circus music, which was nice. Will be doing this one again - bit far from home to come just for this, but when incorporated into a fly-fishing trip to Wych Elm (in Holme village), as I did today, will make for a fun few hours outdoors every now and again. Must check out the BW over Farleton Moor just up the road, too.
